XL RUGBY
CLUB & BRAMPTON RUGBY CLUB ANNOUNCE NEW ASSOCIATION
March 23rd 2005
Today,
the Executives of the Brampton Rugby Club and the XLs Rugby
Club announced an association has been negotiated between the
two Clubs. Brampton RFC is a Senior Club in the Ontario Rugby
Union with five senior teams and six junior teams, while
the XL Club is an over 40s team drawing from across the
GTA.
Brampton
President Dave Waldock welcomed the XLs RFC to their new home
in Brampton on behalf of the executive and members of the
Brampton Beavers Club. “ The XL’s RFC have a long and
distinguished Rugby history, dating from 1975, and they have
been active in all areas of the game for many, many years.
Some members have been instrumental in founding GTA Rugby
Clubs over the years, and we look forward to sharing their wit
and wisdom at the club, whilst watching and playing Rugby
together. “
Brampton,
like all Rugby Clubs, needs to have a membership which
is involved and committed to the growth of the Game. And,
Waldock believes that by deciding to make the Brampton Club
their home, both Clubs will be stronger in the coming
seasons.”
The
Brampton Executive intends to make the XL’s RFC know
that they are an important part of the Brampton RFC. “They
look forward to getting to know members, to enjoy watching
first class Rugby, to reviving some old friendship and making
new ones.”
Scott
Hume of the XLs explains that the Club’s name signifies
the “age of the players, and was taken from the Roman numeral
for the number 40, not from the size or appetites of the
players, as is sometimes suggested.”
For
many years, the XLs played their home games at Marilyn Bell
Park on the Toronto lakeshore, and the local Royal Canadian
Legion served as their “clubhouse”. However, several years
ago, the city decided to upgrade the drainage on that
property, and without further ado or discussion proceeded to
dig up the field. It left the XLs homeless until this
association with the Brampton Rugby Club was overwhelmingly
accepted by both Clubs.
In
their 30th year of existence, the XL RFC is happy
and proud to announce their association and cohabitation
arrangement with Brampton RFC. By way of celebration, and to
kick-off the 2005 season, a reception will be held for both
Clubs at the Brampton clubhouse, on Saturday 9th April

ANNOUNCEMENT
FROM BRAMPTON RUGBY CLUB PRESIDENT DAVE WALDOCK
On behalf of the executive and members of the
Brampton Rugby Football club it is my pleasure to welcome the
XL’s Rugby Club into their new home in Brampton.
The XL’s RFC have a long distinguished Rugby
history, and they have been active in all areas of the game
for many, many years. We look forward to sharing their wit and
wisdom at the club, whilst watching and playing Rugby
together. Like all Clubs in Canada, Brampton needs to have a
membership that is involved and committed to the growth of the
Club. By deciding to make the Brampton Club their home I
believe that we will both be stronger in the upcoming
season.
It is our fervent hope that the XL’s RFC feel that
they are an important part of the Brampton RFC and that they
will take the time to get to know our members, enjoy watching
first class Rugby, revive some old friendships and make some
new ones. Once again please let me welcome you to the
Dam!

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM SCOTT HUME XLs PRESIDENT
In
1975, a group of GTA rugby players decided to refuse to allow
age to be a deterrent to their enjoyment of their sport. They
had all been active in the rugby community (some instrumental
in establishing major GTA clubs), and had no intention of
slowing down.
Their
brainstorm was to establish an over-40’s RFC to draw from
clubs across the GTA. Thus the XL RFC (Toronto) was formed.
The “XL” part of the name was taken from the Roman numeral for
the number 40, not from the size or appetites of the players,
as is sometimes suggested. They also adopted the club motto
“Semper Erectus”, from the Latin meaning “Ever Upright”, or
more appropriately “Always Up”. The double-entendres of this
motto were not lost on anyone, and are just as valid
today.
For
many years, the XLs played their home games at Marilyn Bell
Park on the Toronto lakeshore. The local Royal Canadian Legion
served as their “clubhouse”. Several years ago, the city
decided to upgrade the drainage on that property, and without
further ado or discussion proceeded to dig up the field. It
was under construction for many years, leaving the XLs
homeless.
In
2004, the XLs decided that being homeless was less than
desirable, and went on the hunt for new digs. Several
alternatives were considered, including Brampton RFC. The
Brampton executives and general members reacted
enthusiastically to the idea of a partnership with the XL RFC,
and officially offered their support at their Annual General
Meeting. At our own AGM this February past, the XLs
overwhelmingly voted to accept BRFC’s generous welcome.
In
their 30th year of existence, the XL RFC is happy
and proud to announce their cohabitation arrangement with
BRAMPTON RFC. By way of celebration, and to kick-off the 2005
season, we are inviting all XLs to attend a Spring party at
the Brampton clubhouse, on Saturday April 9th.
The
XLs would also like to invite all BRFC members (and prospects)
to join us for this celebration. This party will be an
opportunity for all to get to know the XL members, and to
discuss any interests in joining us to play, or just to
socialize. NOTE: We don’t check ID … you don’t have to have
reached the magic 40-year stage to be involved. Late-30’s is
close enough!
