Rugby Ontario has mandated
that at least one person (coach, manager) per team (minor and junior
Rugby) must have first-aid training. To that end here is a description
of the sport first aid class, and how to find one in your area.
The award-winning Red
Cross Sport First Aid program sets the standard for sport first aid
training. This 16-hour, practical, hands-on workshop educates sport
volunteers and staff on the prevention, recognition, response and
treatment of sport injuries. Successful completion of the course
results in full Red Cross Standard First Aid certification (including
CPR Class C). The course also meets WSIB standards for workplace first
aid certification, and is recognized as equivalent to Trainer 2 by the
Ontario Hockey Development Centre. Topics covered in the course
include:
Planning for sport safety
Preventing injury through proper training
Preparing to help injured athletes
Emergency Action Plan
Head and spine injuries
Injuries to soft tissue and bone
A Sport Upgrade course for
those who already have current first aid certification is also
available.
