BRAMPTON JUNIOR WOMEN PLAY FOR ONTARIO IN NATIONAL FINALS    16th August 2007

By Jane Kirby

Over 750 players and officials arrived in St. John’s to contest the National Championships in four divisions:  U16 and U18 men and U17 and U19 women.

Brampton RFC's Under 19 player Jane Kirby is one of three Club members representing Ontario at the National Championships in St. Johns, Newfoundland.  The Ontario U19 team has been undefeated so far in the round robin part of the tournament.

The team's first game was against P.E.I., the newest Province in the tournament so far, and we 3wanted to give a good showing. The conditions for this match were not the greatest with cloudy skies, while the ground was wet and slippery.  Despite these conditions, we punched it up with a final score of 36-0.  We have no set the pace for the rest of the tournament.

Later that day, you would think we were in a completely different part of the world, because the sun came out, the temperature rose to around 18 C, and the ground was not as windy as it was for the first game.  Our opponents, New Brunswick, didn't stand a chance. We hit the field with real intensity and won by 38-0. We have quickly established ourselves as the favorites and the team to beat.

Rumors soon spread that British Columbia, our traditional rivals, were going to upset us. However, when we played them today, the pitch was wonderful: Slightly overcast, not too strong of a wind, and dry. By half-time we had a dominating score of 25-0.  B.C. fought back in the second period, but Ontario won by 29-5.

Tonight we have our Tournament banquet and the Provincial teams (both men and women) are required to attend. It should be a night of fun, but we will not forget that tomorrow we face Manitoba, the last team we have to face in the round robin before we make the finals.

Current form suggests that we may be playing Alberta in the semi finals, and then Quebec in the finals.  It should be interesting.
