BRAMPTON'S AARON ABRAMS & RYAN SMITH ON LONG SQUAD FOR RWC 2007 24 January 2007

Rugby Canada has announced a preliminary 62  man “long list” for the 2007 Rugby World Cup, and both Aaron Abrams and Ryan Smith are named to this squad. The long list includes all those who are considered as likely candidates to make up Canada’s 30-man squad for the Tournament.

Canada Coach Ric Suggitt says “We have decided to announce this squad now so that the players know where they stand and can continue their preparations... Over the past three years we have looked at a great number of players and this list reflects our thoughts at this time.  This does not mean that others can’t be added to the list."

The list will be pared down to 50 players by June 15th, and will be further reduced by August 14th when the final list of 30 players must be presented to the World Cup Organizing Committee to arrange flights and details.

The 62 man list contains 21 Canadian players currently playing professionally overseas, including Ryan Smith at Montauban in France. However, the list also contains most of Canada’s top domestic players, including Aaron Abrams. There are only fourteen uncapped players on the list, inclusing young players like 18 year-old Nathan Hirayama, 19 year-olds Matt Evans and Nick Trenkle, and 20 year-old Phil MacKenzie..

While veterans Jon Thiel, Rod Snow and Pat Dunkley are included, John Cannon, playing professional Rugby in the UK and garth Cooke, are not.

Canada’s World Cup Pool consists of games against Wales in Nantes on September 9; against Fiji in Cardiff on September 16, against Japan on Sept. 24 and Australia on Sept. 29 in Bordeaux.
