RYAN SMITH SUBS IN AS CANADA LOSES GRITTY MATCH TO WALES
11Tth Sept 2007
Brampton's Ryan Smith and his Canadian
teammates have left Nantes where they played their opening match
of the Rugby World Cup, to travel to Wales to play in Cardiff.
This will be against Fiji on Sunday, September 16th

Ryan started on the bench for Canada against
Wales, with Ander Munro taking to starting fly half position.
Canada gave a
well-organized, gritty forward display and gave Wales a scare for sixty
minutes of their opening Rugby World Cup encounter at Stade Beaujoire in
Nantes on Sunday. Canada scored three tries to lead the Welsh 17 - 9 at
the half.
.
Unfortunately, a five-try reply by Wales
sank Canada’s hopes of an upset victory as Wales eventually ran out
42-17 winners. Ryan came on at fly half towards the end of the game, but
the match was already lost. There is no doubt Canada won considerable
respect for its courageous performance and the way it held to its
tactics for the first half.
Following the match, air of disappointment pervaded Canada’s dressing
room. There is a feeling that Canada had let a potential Rugby World Cup
upset slip away. It was a quiet dressing room as everyone reflected on
what might have been. However, as Coach Suggitt put it, "we came here to
win three games and now we must prepare for the next. |
