RYAN SMITH SCORES FIRST TRY FOR MONTAUBAN TARN-ET-GARONNE IN
EUROPEAN CHALLENGE CUP 12th November 2007
Montauban centre Yoan Audrin, together
with skipper and flanker Matthew Clarkin
scored two tries apiece, while Brampton's Ryan Smith scored his
first try for the Club, in the opening minute of the game, as the home side ran in 11 tries in front of
3,000 fans at Stade de Sapiac. New Zealand fly-half Rima Wakarua
kicked both goals for Parma, who were finished off by
replacement Anthony Tesquet's nine points (a try and two
conversions) in the last three minutes.
After
the game, New Zealander Matthew Clarkin said, "I am very proud
to have been captain of this team, in which our new recruits
have been quickly integrated. "Without the pressure of the Top
14 games, we managed to put together this evening everything we
have been working on in practice sessions." Even if the European
Challenge and the Top 14 are very different competitions, what
we have shown is that we can play in championship matches"
The players were happy back in the changing room, while the coaches
expressed a similar satisfaction. Coach Laurent Travers
suggested that the Parma back line was a bit like a saloon door at times
this evening, but "we set up some good plays. And in defence, we
succeeded in keeping our line solid from one end of the field to the
other. The goals of this match were to play the game well, to prove how
dangerous our attack can be, to make a minimum of faults and so cancel
out any counter-attacks, and not to have tries scored against us. Job
done!"
WORCESTER PUIS BRIVE.
Against Parma
the MTG XV recorded a bona fide victory. "We are going to be really
competitive in this European Challenge competition. It's the best way to
prepare for the next championship events. We will see soon, following
our position in the competition if we can qualify.
On Saturday we have the second match when we play at Worcester away.
Then we will have to prepare for the match against Brive. The Brive
ground is always a tricky place for us to play. Brive must win to get
back into the competition. We will need to be well prepared for that
encounter. As for the integration of the new recruits into the squad,
MTG's success is not a surprise to the forwards coach. It just takes
time. You can't build a house in a day. Our objective this season is to
stay in the Top 14, which means we will need at least 10 victories. That
is our road map." Coach Laurent
Labit concluded by saying that it will be interesting to see how the
newcomers stimulate the play of the old guard. They will have to work
hard.
