Ryan Smith scored a try at
22 minutes on Saturday as Montauban ran out of gas playing
against Clermont in France's T 14 play. The final score
was 40 - 13, after Montauban trailed only 12 - 10 at the half.
Canadian Jamie Cudmore was playing for Clermont.
The match lasted about twenty minutes too long for Montauban.
Coach Laurent Travers said," The score really doesn't reflect
the game we played against Clermont. However, sometimes we saw
the difference between a mid (9th place) and top of the table
(3rd place) team,
Montauban started the game trying to upset the local team, and
they were rewarded with the onloy first half try from Ryan
Smith. But, as Brock James converted very goal attempt, the
advantage gradually moved to the Auvergnats by half time. The
expenditure of energy in taking the game to Clermont in the
first half, took a big toll in the second. In a match where
Montauban seemed to be showing hopw well they can play, they
finally succumbed to a heavy defeat The last twenty
minutes were just too much.
