BRAMPTON WOMEN DEFEAT CRUSADERS 25 - 15 6th
July 2008 Photos & Report T. Kirby
A strong Brampton Women’s
side started the game and their pressure in the early going
was rewarded with a try when Jules McGann dove into the
Crusaders' end zone. This great start to the match galvanized
the Brampton team and for the rest of the period the Brampton
women looked sharp, winning most of the scrums and rucks and
maintaining possession for long periods of play. During one of
these periods, Andrea Breuer managed to power over for one of
her three tries in the first half. At the final whistle, the
score was 25 - 15 in favour of Brampton, but most of the
remainder of the game was hard work.

Right from the restart of
the second half, it suddenly seemed to be a very different
Brampton team which was playing. Suddenly, the Brampton team
appeared tired, seemingly disorganized and error prone, and
the regularly gave up possession to an Oakville squad that
stormed back into the game with renewed vigour.

A large part of play in the
second half was spent under pressure between Brampton’s 5 and
ten metre lines. The Brampton women did show dogged
determination in repulsing wave after wave of the Crusaders'
attacks, and indeed, the whole match became bogged down in a
game, not for yardage, but for a few feet and inches. The
Beavers were completely on the defensive.

Twice the CRU managed to
score. The only
time Brampton engineered an escape was from a series of
well-placed kicks from hand, which bought the Brampton women
some ”real estate.” This allowed the team to gradually work
their way back on to the offensive. Finally, the Brampton
players seemed to wake up, and they once again seemed to
cohere as a team. Once more, good communication, a
return to effective passing and a renewed sense of purpose led
to a renewed domination of the ruck and scrum, and the
Brampton team moved onto the front foot.
At the end, the victory had
a bitter sweet flavour to it. The flow of the game was choppy,
with the referee starting and stopping play inconsistently.
Sometimes the whistle came quickly; sometimes it was
long-delayed, and this seemed to prevent either side from
developing any rhythm. The win was a good one (aren't they
all?), but too often the Brampton team seemed to forget
about alignment and made ragged, wild eyed, frantic passes
which were invariably mishandled. The Brampton coaches will
have a hard time deciding on which aspects to focus the next
practice.
Some players played very well. In fact most of the team showed
great flair and hard work in the game. However, as a team,
there was an inability to adapt to the referee, a lack of
teamwork and leadership, and an uncharacteristic
plethora of errors.
