BRAMPTON WOMEN DEFEAT STONEY CREEK    by Brian Kelly  12th August 2008

This past Tuesday 12th August was a game that has been five years in the making. Brampton Women's team defeated Stoney Creek RFC by 12 - 5. It was a game that the Brampton Beavers Women's team has been working on hard for five seasons.

For those who were unable to attend on Tuesday night, the women’s team hosted Stoney Creek in a promotion game. Stoney Creek are the Niagara Rugby Union champions and Brampton Beavers are the Toronto Rugby Union champions. These two sides set out to play what ended up as a fantastic game for the right to be promoted in 2009.

Without a doubt, Stoney Creek were by far Brampton Women's toughest competitors this year. Although they were extremely strong in the back line, our back line was more than equal to the challenge. Meanwhile, the Brampton forwards proved to be just too strong for the opposition with some great runs by Jenna Livingston and some outstanding tackles ad defence, as always, from Paige Gregson.

This Brampton team really came out and played "15 as 1" Rugby for 80 full minutes. Tries were scored by captain Darlene Downey and fullback Sarah Jess, together with a conversion by Paige Gregson. The match was a pay off for all the hard work the team has put in over the entire season.

With this victory, the Brampton Women have earned the right to move back up to the Ontario Women’s League, the premier league in Ontario. However, our work is not finished, and we still have one last game. The finals of the TRU will be held on Saturday August 23rd at Fletcher’s Field where we will take on Oshawa.

The Oshawa team is the only team that has managed to solve us this season. With a 1-1 record against them this year, we will certainly have our hands full, and we must remain focused as we continue to play our team game for 80 minutes.

I would like to take a moment as we come to the end of the season to thank all of our supporters, friends, family and fellow Beavers. Their support goes a long way. It is always nice to have you, the 16th player, cheering us on. With this being said, it’s a short drive to Markham, so come and enjoy a beautiful day and more great Rugby. Come on out and support your sisters, daughters, friends and teammates. Go the Beavers!! Brampton Pride!!
