BRAMPTON WOMEN TIE VS NOMADS
IN OPENING OWL MATCH
23rd May 2009
by Brian Kelly
Saturday 23rd May 2009 represented a a great building
block in the future of Brampton Women’s Rugby. The
Brampton Women played an inspired game against the Toronto
Nomads and tied them 20 - 20.
The Brampton team
played
with great intensity and showed confident, all round team
play. We expected this year to be a challenge, having moved up
a division to the Ontario Women's League, but after
yesterday’s game, I think it’s fair to say, we have proved we
belong.
Late in the game we pulled ahead for the first time, touching
down our fourth try, to take the score to 20-15. After an
exciting goal line stand, and repeated breakdowns, we were
unlucky to have a penalty called against us. The Nomads had
the ball 5 metres out and were able to score from right of the
posts. The referee signaled that there was no time left on the
clock and the game would be over after the kick. Without a
single conversion having been made in the match to this point,
we were hoping this streak would prevail…and it did. The kick
was not made and we eventually came away with a 20-20 tie.
Although this was a significant team effort, there were two of
our wily veterans who heavily contributed to our great game.
Andrea “Bru” Breuer made her debut as #8, and anyone who did
not know better would swear that this was her regular
position. She was all over the field, making outstanding runs
and punishing tackles. Not to be out done, Chalia “C” Porter,
had some outstanding runs of her own, and I believe she helped
three of their subs get into the game as she wore each
opposite number out.
Congratulations to the team, and to our new captains, Sonya
and Sarah Jess. They have all the makings of great leaders. I
am extremely proud of each and every one of the women. It is
games like this that make me love coaching so much. I am
looking forward to our next match versus London on Sunday, May
31st at 1:30pm.
It would be great to have some support, come out and watch
some great Rugby and support your club. Go the BEAVERS!
How proud? DAM PROUD!!
