BRAMPTON RUGBY CLUB'S JIM FLYNN HOLDS FREE COACHING SESSION   3rd February 2009

by Mark Falkinson BRFC Director Junior Development

On Tuesday January 27th, 2009,  a group of Rugby coaches from the Peel region, as well as some twenty College players aspiring to further their knowledge of the Game, gathered in the Brampton Beavers' Club house for an exclusive coaching session.

The presentation was led by Jim Flynn, recently returned from Australia, and the session allowed attendees to work one-on-one with Jim.

The evening started with the group watching two IRB videos: The first was SMART RUGBY, which explores and suggests the safest ways to execute basic Rugby-related activities, such as the scrum, the line out, correct tackling technique and much more; the second video was an In-depth look at the new Experimental Law Variations (ELVs) which explain how the Laws evolved, and when the Laws should be used In a variety of tactical situations. IRB LAUNCHES RUGBY READY PROGRAM                  26th October 2007

The International Rugby Board has launched an exciting initiative aimed at educating players, coaches and match officials at all levels on the important subject of injury prevention and management.

The resource, which can be accessed through the Training and Education channel on www.irb.com has been produced in English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Russian and is available in print, online and DVD format. "The Rugby Ready program is designed to help all players and coaches, irrespective of their ability, as well as match officials and Union administrators, because it can be easy to overlook the importance of coaching correct physical preparation, skills techniques and injury management," said IRB Training Manager Mark Harrington. DUMP TACKLES - IRB RULINGS  22nd November 2005

The IRFU requested a ruling regarding Law 10-Foul Play whereby, current Law prohibits the tackling of a player who is in the air, either in the line out or in open play.

The Law is designed to protect players, and to prevent them landing on the ground, on their heads or upper body. It appears a serious anomaly, therefore, that a player(s) can deliberately lift an opponent off his feet and then may drop (or ‘spear’) the opponent so that he lands head down or on his upper body.   MORE

GUIDELINES FOR PROPER HYDRATION IN RUGBY February 2005

Rugby is an extremely demanding sport.  Practicing for and/or playing rugby during the hot summer months entails working up a sweat.   In fact, one may loose up to one liter of water during a game or practice session depending on climate conditions.  One must re-hydrate at the same if not at a superior rate as what’s lost in a workout.  Otherwise, the body is placed at risk of dehydration that could end in serious consequences.  The National Athletic Trainer’s Association has a Position Statement explaining the role of proper hydration in athletic performance.  The following was adapted from this Statement and the reader is encouraged to refer to the said Statement for further information   MORE
