PRACTICE SCHEDULE Contact E-Mail Address
U-18 Girls Monday and Thursday 6:30pm-8:30pm Brian Kelly briankelly_55@hotmail.com

*Registration fee for the 2011 Season is $280 (includes shorts, socks and jersey). Players can start practicing with the women's team on the April 11th if they wish. Games don't start until June. All U18, new and returning, are encouraged to start coming to practice as soon as possible. If anyone is concerned about doing contact at practice, because of also having high school practice, it is fine to sit out of any contact drills.

**For any younger players under 18 wishing to start playing rugby this summer, we are hoping to be able to have an under 15 team that will compete in 6 tournaments throughout the summer. This team will be composed of 12-15 year old girls. If you are in this age group or know someone who is, no experience is necessary, come out to the club on a Monday or Thursday night and meet the coaching staff.

JUNIOR GIRLS U-18: TRU CHAMPS WITH WIN vs. OSHAWA VIKINGS

The Brampton Beavers under 18 girl's rugby team played their league championship game against the Oshawa Vikings on Sunday Aug. 29th and came out on the winning end. The Toronto Rugby Union Championship is one that eluded this team in last year's final against these same Oshawa Vikings. When head coach Brian Kelly assembled this team, it was stated that anything less than the championship in 2010 would be a difficult pill to swallow. The girls clicked almost immediatley adding quality first year players to the returing 10 veterans and assembled a 5 and 1 record going into the first of 3 rounds of play-offs.

Part of summer club rugby is the opportunity to represent both your province and your league in both national and provincial tournaments. This team placed 11 players on various representative teams. The power of this squad was evident in the championship game as, while missing 3 of the provincial players, they still managed to lead the entire game and come away with a 15-10 victory.

The Ontario Cup was a bit of a disappointment to end the season. This particular event was not even on the schedule until the TRU semi-final. The purpose, format and schedule were not posted until the week prior to the event. Nevertheless, Brampton sent what players it did have to play against an all-star team from Eastern Ontario wearing Barhaven Scottish colours, and an upstart team from Chatham bolstered by some U-19 players. Brampton dropped the opening game of the 2 game event to the EORU team with a 17-10 score, on the final play of the game. The team rebounded to beat the Chatham club 38-5 to take home the silver medal.

The future bodes well for this team as 15 of the 19 players who dressed for the Ontario Cup tournament are eligible to return to the U-18 program in 2011. Add to that, 3 more players who were unavailable for the Ontario Cup, and this team can start 2011 with 18 veteran players.

Congratulations to each and every player. Special mention to our representative players:

TRU Representatives at the Ontario Summer Games: Chelsea Beatty, Nancy Anselmi, Kelsey Bardy and Jill Cambell

Ontario Representatives at various National tournaments: Deanna Foster, Shannon White, Jasmin Neve, Maire Balzan, Claire Martin, Debbie Owusu-Akyeeah and Dakota Edwards

JUNIOR GIRLS U-18: SEASON UPDATE

For those of you who haven’t heard, the U18 Women’s team is off to a fantastic start this season. With three commanding victories and a total score of 143 points for and only 7 against so far, they are set to make a run very deep into the playoffs. Their latest victory came against Barrie with a very one-sided affair, 91-0. The team, led by team captains Shannon White and Nancy Anselmi, were virtually unstoppable. Brampton led in all aspects of the game especially set pieces and running with ball in hand. With the short of time they have spent together, only having two full practices, they have really come together nicely. With more practices and games under their belts, it is almost scary how good this team might be. If you have not had the pleasure of seeing them play, I would encourage you to come out this Thursday, July 22nd, for a 6:30pm kickoff as we play Mississauga. The team is made up of a great bunch of young ladies from various schools around the Peel region. We have numerous Ontario players filling out our roster. On the U18 team we have Dakota Edwards, Debbie Owusu-Akyeeah, Maire Balzan and Claire Martin. On the U17 team are Shannon White, Kelsey Bardy and Jasmine Neve. And on the U16 is Deanna Foster.

With this amazing group of rugby enthusiasts, the future is very bright for women’s rugby at Brampton. Many of these U18’s have already cracked the senior squads and it won’t be long before they are all competing and earning positions amongst the ranks.

ATTENTION BRAMPTON RFC WOMEN RUGBY PLAYERS ENTERING UNIVERSITY

This message is for those of you who are keen to play university level rugby after graduating from high school. York University is actively trying to improve its program through the recruitment of talented high school and club rugby players. The York team is young and improving and there will be plenty of opportunity to make the weekly starting 22 selections in your first year at York and help share in the success of the program going forward.

The coaching staff has implemented an new style of rugby that you’ve likely never seen or played before and it makes for a dynamic and exciting season. It’s a brand of high risk / high reward rugby that gives everyone a chance to contribute.

We currently have two Beavers in the York program. Courtney Thomas and Emily Pattenick – both have shown well thus far in the season. I am sure either of them would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

If you are interested in playing university rugby at York please feel free to contact either Joe Costello (joecost@yorku.ca) or Bob Periard (bperiard@yorku.ca) for more details or visit http://www.sport.yorku.ca/interuniversity_sport/teams/rugby_w/index.asp and take a look.

There is also an opportunity for incoming students to obtain a financial athletic award which will last your 4 years of university, subject to maintaining a quality academic result.

So if playing university rugby interests you and playing on a university team where you have a good chance of getting playing time from year one – I encourage you to choose York as one of your post secondary choices and keep us in mind. I hope to hear from you.

Regards, Joe Costello Coach – York Women’s Rugby
