RUGBY SEVENS SELECTED AS
OLYMPIC SPORT FOR 2016 13th August 2009
from CTV Sports article
Olympic leaders have selected golf
and Rugby for proposed inclusion in the 2016 Summer Games, rejecting
bids from baseball, softball and 3 other sports. Today, the
International Olympic Committee executive board narrowed the field to
two sports from a list of seven, which also included squash, karate and
roller sports.
The board will submit golf and
Rugby Sevens for ratification by the full 106-member IOC assembly in
Copenhagen in October. "In the end, the decision came down to which two
would add the most value,'' IOC president Jacques Rogge said. "Golf and
Rugby will be a great addition to the Games. ... They have global
appeal, a geographically diverse lineup of top iconic athletes and an
ethic that stresses fair play.''

features only two changes from last Saturday's 55-0 defeat to Ireland,
and one change on the bench. .
Canada coach Kieran Crowley will
be looking for improvement over last Saturday's outing. "I think against
Ireland we were on our back foot from nearly the beginning," said
Crowley - who indicated the officiating was frustrating for his young
team in the first half. The traditional colors of the two teams will be

BRAMPTON'S RYAN
SMITH SELECTED FOR FALL TOUR 14 October 2008 From Rugby
Canada article
Brampton Rugby Club's Ryan Smith has been
selected to be part of Canada's four country tour to Europe this
Fall. There are a challenging series of matches ahead in
Portugal, Ireland, Wales and Scotland, and his experience will
be useful.
With the first match in Lisbon taking
place just outside the International Rugby Board window for
access to professional based players - the reliance has been
made on a number of Canada's domestic based players and veterans
like Smith. Then, in the remainder of the tour the squad will tap
into the experience of some of the overseas based pros, to take
on three of the four home nations.
Veteran National Team player Ryan Smith -
who has moved back to Canada and is temporarily playing Club
Rugby in Calgary - is in the side with an ability to cover
off at both fly-half and centre.

BRAMPTON CONNECTIONS AT U20 WOMEN'S NATIONS CUP
15th July 2008
Brampton RFC has strong ties and connections at the Under 20
Women's Nations Cup being held in
Oakville's Appleby College. It is a magnificent pitch in a
natural bowl, and
the warm weather has attracted small crowds. The absence of a
program for the Tournament, the lack of earphones for
linesmen in the Canada A game, the players singing (heartily and well) their
respective National anthems, but without music, the lack of
Rugby Canada representatives at the event, all speak to the
small budget for this event, but the women deserve all the
support they can manage.

Canada U 20 is one of three international teams playing a
Tournament for the Crystal Cup, a magnificent crystal
glass trophy, originally played for in a NAWIRA Tournament and
selected by former Brampton coach Jill Zonneveld. Canada "A,"
a second Canada U20 team is playing exhibition matches against
England and Wales at the Tournament.
